Fourth place at the Norisring for Walkenhorst Motorsport

After the spectacular first race at the DTM street circuit, in which only eleven cars saw the checkered flag, BMW factory driver Marco Wittmann just missed out on the podium on Sunday and secured the fourth place in front of his home crowd.

Norisring. The notorious DTM street circuit in Nuremberg had it all. After a hard-fought, two-part qualifying, local hero Marco Wittmann and his teammate Esteban Muth, started Saturday’s race from P14 and P21. The competition for the green Schaeffler-BMW M4 GT3 with the number 11 was already over in the first lap. After a heavy contact with opponents in Turn 1, Wittmann piloted his badly damaged car back into the pit lane and had to park it. The Belgian talent Esteban Muth was on 13th place shortly before the restart. A bit later, the number 10 was involved in a serious accident, which not only meant that the race ended early, but also made it impossible to start on Sunday. In the end, only eleven of the 27 DTM vehicles crossed the finish line.

Highly motivated, Marco Wittmann went into qualifying on Sunday in front of his home crowd, who created a good atmosphere in the Steintribüne in Schaeffler outfits. The Walkenhorst Motorsport driver secured the third place on the grid. The #11 car was able to defend its starting position up until the pit stop, but just missed out on the podium with fourth place after 67 laps.

After the upcoming summer break, the DTM will start into the second half of the season. Marco Wittmann is currently in eighth place in the drivers’ standings.

The weekend was very positive for newcomer Theo Oeverhaus. On Saturday he celebrated his first win of the season in the DTM Trophy after starting from 14th place. The #34 finished the second race in fifth place.

The next DTM weekend will take place from August 26th to 28th at the Nürburgring, Germany.

“It was a mixed weekend with the big crash at the start on Saturday, which cost us a lot of points. But I was happy about P3 in Sunday’s qualifying. The grid position was the best I’ve ever had at the Norisring. This result gave us a lot of optimism for the race where we had good pace. I was third for a long time. Unfortunately, not everything went smoothly during the pit stop, which cost us the podium. I was really looking forward to the home podium, so at least we still took some important points with us. The DTM weekend at the Norisring was a great event, which I really enjoyed in front of my home crowd and the green Schaeffler wall. Now the focus is on the second half of the season!”

Esteban Muth, driver BMW M4 GT3 #10

“Of course, it wasn’t the weekend we wanted. I felt very comfortable in the car. I had a good start and was able to avoid collisions. We were 13th at the restart, but a short time later my vehicle was so badly damaged in a violent collision with an opponent that I was no longer able to take part in the race on Sunday. We hope that we will have better luck after the summer break.”

Nach dem spektakulären ersten Rennen am DTM-Stadtkurs, bei dem nur elf Fahrzeuge die Zielflagge sahen, verpasste BMW Werksfahrer Marco Wittmann am Sonntag das Podium nur knapp und sicherte sich den vierten Platz vor seinem Heimpublikum.

Norisring. Der berüchtigte DTM-Stadtkurs von Nürnberg hatte es in sich. Nach einem hart umkämpften, zweigeteilten Qualifying ging es für Lokalmatador Marco Wittmann und seinen Kollegen, Esteban Muth, von P14 und P21 ins Samstagsrennen. Bereits in der ersten Runde war der Wettkampf für den grünen Schaeffler-BMW M4 GT3 mit der Startnummer 11 zu Ende. Nach einem heftigen Kontakt mit Kontrahenten in Turn 1 pilotierte Wittmann seinen stark beschädigten Boliden zurück in die Pit Lane und musste diesen abstellen. Das belgische Talent Esteban Muth lag kurz vor dem Restart auf Platz 13. Kurze Zeit später war die Nummer 10 in einen heftigen Unfall verwickelt, der nicht nur das frühzeitige Rennende bedeutete, sondern auch einen Start am Sonntag unmöglich machte. Am Ende überquerten lediglich elf der 27 DTM-Fahrzeuge die Ziellinie.

Hochmotiviert ging es für Marco Wittmann am Sonntag in das Qualifying vor seinem Heimpublikum, das auf der Steintribüne in den Schaeffler-Outfits für gute Stimmung sorgte. Der Walkenhorst Motorsportpilot sicherte sich den dritten Startplatz für das Rennen. Bis zum Boxenstopp konnte die #11 die Ausgangsposition verteidigen, verpasste nach 67 Runden das Podium jedoch knapp mit dem vierten Platz.

Nach der nun anstehenden Sommerpause startet die DTM in die zweiten Saisonhälfte. Aktuell liegt Marco Wittmann auf dem achten Rang der Fahrerwertung.

Für Newcomer Theo Oeverhaus verlief das Wochenende sehr positiv. Er feierte am Samstag den ersten Saisonsieg in der DTM Trophy, nachdem er vom 14. Rang gestartet war. Das zweite Rennen beendete die #34 auf Platz fünf.

Das nächste DTM Wochenende findet von 26. bis 28. August am Nürburgring, Deutschland, statt.

„Es war ein durchwachsenes Wochenende mit dem großen Startcrash am Samstag, der uns um viele Punkte gebracht hat. Dafür freute ich mich über P3 im Sonntags-Qualifying. Die Startposition war die beste, die ich je am Norisring einfahren konnte. Dieses Ergebnis hat uns viel Optimismus fürs Rennen gegeben, in dem wir eine gute Pace hatten. Ich war lange Zeit auf Platz drei. Beim Boxenstopp ging leider nicht alles glatt, was uns das Podium gekostet hat. Dem Heim-Podium habe ich entgegengefiebert, so haben wir zumindest trotzdem einige wichtige Punkte mitgenommen. Das DTM-Wochenende am Norisring war ein tolles Event, welches ich gerade vor heimischen Publikum und der grünen Schaeffler-Wand sehr genossen habe. Nun liegt der Fokus auf der zweiten Saisonhälfte!“

„Natürlich war es nicht das Wochenende, das wir wollten. Ich habe mich im Auto sehr wohl gefühlt. Ich hatte einen guten Start und konnte Kollisionen vermeiden. Wir waren beim Restart auf P13, doch kurze Zeit später wurde mein Fahrzeug bei einem heftigen Aufprall mit einem Kontrahenten so stark beschädigt, dass ich am Sonntag nicht mehr am Rennen teilnehmen konnte. Wir hoffen, dass wir nach der Sommerpause mehr Glück haben.“
