Walkenhorst Motorsport takes second place in the bronze class of the 24 Hours of Spa with the #35

The 24 Hours of Spa looked promising for the two BMW M4 GT3s from Walkenhorst Motorsport. In the morning hours, both vehicles were in the top two in their classes. But only the #35 crossed the finish line on second place in the Bronze Cup.

Spa. The legendary long-distance event in the Ardennes got off to a promising start for Walkenhorst Motorsport. In bright sunshine, the #34 BMW M4 GT3 started the 74th edition of the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa from third place in the Gold Cup. But for Richard Heistand (USA), Michael Dinan (USA), Robby Foley (USA) and Jens Klingmann (GER) it came to an early end. Running in second position, a technical problem led to the retirement of the yellow-blue car with about seven hours left.

With Henry Walkenhorst (GER), Jörg Breuer (GER), Donald Yount (USA) and Theo Oeverhaus (GER) behind the wheel, the number 35 car was in the lead of the bronze class for a long time. But half an hour before the end of the race, things got heated again for the mechanics. Jörg Breuer dealt with a puncture and had to pit unscheduled. The crew kept their nerves and brought home second place in the cup in front of 73,000 spectators.

The world’s largest GT3 event offered 15 full-course yellow phases, numerous safety cars and a night-time break in the race. In the end, 43 of the 66 vehicles that started on the 7.004 km route crossed the finish line. The flag was waved for the leading group after 536 laps.

„We came here aiming for the victory in Gold Cup. It’s been a very intense journey together and starting from P3 showed what we were capable of. Spa is a very special race and obviously the toughest 24h GT3 race on earth. We fought our way to the front and overcame some difficulties but ultimately, we found ourselves fighting for the win after 17h of racing. Unfortunately, we had to retire the car with about seven remaining hours hunting the leaders but that’s “racing”. We can be proud of our team work and the great pace we’ve had and hopefully we’ll have another shot next year.”

In the end it wasn’t quite enough for P1 in the class. Sometimes just the necessary luck is missing. But we will attack again next time.”

Das 24 Stunden Rennen von Spa sah vielversprechend für die zwei BMW M4 GT3 aus dem Hause Walkenhorst Motorsport aus. In den Morgenstunden lagen beide Fahrzeuge in ihren Klassen in den Top Zwei. Doch nur die #35 überquerte die Ziellinie als Zweiter im Bronze Cup.

Spa. Das legendäre Langstrecken-Event in den Ardennen startete vielversprechend für Walkenhorst Motorsport. Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein ging es für den BMW M4 GT3 #34 im Gold Cup vom dritten Platz in die 74. Ausgabe der TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa. Doch für Richard Heistand (USA), Michael Dinan (USA), Robby Foley (USA) und Jens Klingmann (DE) gab es ein frühes Ende. Auf der zweiten Position liegend führte ein technisches Problem mit knapp sieben verbleibenden Stunden zum Aus des gelb-blauen Boliden.

Die Startnummer 35 lag mit Henry Walkenhorst (DE), Jörg Breuer (DE), Donald Yount (USA) und Theo Oeverhaus (DE) hinter dem Steuer lange in Führung der Bronze Klasse. Doch eine halbe Stunde vor Rennende wurde es noch einmal spannend für die Mechaniker. Jörg Breuer hatte mit einem Reifenschaden zu kämpfen und musste außerplanmäßig an die Box. Die Crew behielt die Nerven und brachte den zweiten Platz im Cup vor 73.000 Zuschauern nach Hause.

Die weltweit größte GT3-Veranstaltung bot 15 Full-Course-Yellow Phasen, etliche Safety Cars und eine nächtliche Rennunterbrechung. Auf der 7,004 km langen Strecke kamen schlussendlich 43 der 66 angetretenen Fahrzeuge ins Ziel. Für die Führungsgruppe wurde nach 536 gemeisterten Runden die Flagge geschwenkt.

„Wir sind hierher gekommen, um den Sieg im Gold Cup zu erringen. Es war eine sehr intensive gemeinsame Reise und der Start auf P3 hat gezeigt, wozu wir fähig sind. Spa ist ein ganz besonderes Rennen und offensichtlich das härteste 24H-GT3-Rennen der Welt. Wir haben uns nach vorne gekämpft und einige Schwierigkeiten überwunden, aber letztendlich haben wir nach 17 Stunden um den Sieg gekämpft. Leider mussten wir das Auto mit knapp sieben verbleibenden Stunden abstellen, aber das ist „racing“. Wir können stolz auf unsere Teamarbeit und den großartigen Platz sein, den wir hatten, und hoffentlich haben wir nächstes Jahr eine weitere Chance.“

Am Ende hat es nicht ganz für P1 in der Klasse gereicht. Manchmal fehlt eben das nötige Glück. Aber wir greifen beim nächsten Mal wieder an.“
